EDIT: Out of curiousity, I googled "best translation dead souls" (without the quotation marks) and discovered that a lot of people are considered the book's best translator. By "dead souls" Gogol understands emptiness and lack of spirituality of their characters. Nothing is sacred for money-grubber Chichikov. Plyushkin has lost all his human likeness.
